# Spirit of Sutterby: Sutterby is a small hamlet lost in a fold of the Lincolnshire Wolds just down the road from Langton-by-Spilsby and Harrington. There is a small church, which is always open, and a handful of houses. But what used to be there? We do know it is a deserted medieval village with the humps and bumps to prove it – there are a lot of archival records holding key information to the village’s past.

There were 2 separate sessions, 1 in the morning and the 2nd in the afternoon. - [Must Farm: An Update and Review – Dr Chris Wakefield](https://spiritofsutterby.com/news/must-farm-an-update-and-review-dr-chris-wakefield/): For those of you who have forgotten or do not know MUST FARM was a project where archaeologists from the Cambridge Archaeological Unit excavated the remains of a Late Bronze Age (950BC) pile-dwelling settlement, consisting of houses built on stilts above a river and surrounded by a palisade of sharpened posts. The settlement was destroyed in a catastrophic fire only 9-12 months after it was constructed and the preservation of a wide range artefacts from everyday Bronze-Age life is truly astounding.

- [Grantham Gingerbread](https://spiritofsutterby.com/recipes/grantham-gingerbread/): Grantham is known for being the place where Sir Isaac Newton went to school. It also had the first female police officer in 1914, the first running diesel engine in 1892 and the UK's first tractor in 1896. Grantham Gingerbread is hard to find in the town, which is sad because it really is delicious. Very different to the gingerbread that we usually find and very pale as it doesn't use treacle, it is crunchy, hollow and somewhat reminiscent of honeycomb. The story goes that it originated by accident in Grantham in about 1740. A local baker made a mistake with his ingredients and found that this was the result - a happy accident, and some of the best ideas come from a simple mistake!
