Sutterby is a small hamlet lost in a fold of the Lincolnshire Wolds just down the road from Langton-by-Spilsby and Harrington. There is a small church, which is always open, and a handful of houses. But what used to be there? We do know it is a deserted medieval village with the humps and bumps to prove it – there are a lot of archival records holding key information to the village’s past.
Spirit of Sutterby is a community heritage project . Our goals are to explore this village, research its past, record its present and help with its future. As our work progresses we will investigate Sutterby’s surrounding villages and their landscapes.

This project has been made possible with the support of the organisations below.
The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service
The Harrington Estate
The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service protects and promotes the Lincolnshire Wolds.
It preserves and enhances the unique landscape, raises awareness, and encourages community interest and involvement.
Their consistent support has enabled the Spirit of Sutterby to complete many projects for which we are most grateful.
Friends of Friendless Churches is a small charity which saves redundant historic churches. It owns over 40 former places of worship which are preserved as peaceful spaces for visitors and the local community to enjoy. This includes St John the Baptist church here at Sutterby.
Most are medieval, and all of them are listed.
Most of the settlement of Sutterby is situated on private land which forms part of The Harrington Estate, without whose kind co-operation this project would not be possible.
Visitors should note that, apart from the Church and Churchyard, access to Estate land is not allowed without specific permission.
Please do not park in the farm yard or in front of the barns.
This website has been funded by the Lincolnshire Wolds Small Grant Scheme through the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service.
