The Skendleby Stones: An introductory session
3 June, 2025 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Horncastle Community Centre, Horncastle LN9 5HF, UKIn 2003 a number of pieces of carved stone, presumed to be from the chapel of St James, were discovered in Skendleby. These stones are now collected and stored together but at present there is no accurate record of them. This project aims to draw and record a selection of the stones and then to deposit the records with HER etc.
In order to achieve this, we need to acquire the principles and skills of stone recording and to understand better the architectural forms and the masonry techniques in use in this body of material. Professor Mark Gardiner has kindly agreed to lead this research and we start with an introductory talk, which will provide an insight into medieval stonework and stone recording.
Immediately following the talk there will be a visit to St Michael’s, Martin to consider mediaeval stonework in situ. This talk and visit is open to anyone who has an interest in medieval stonework. The detailed recording of the stones will be carried out in subsequent workshops.
