On Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, we visited the Horncastle Community Centre, where we had an introductory session with Professor Mark Gardiner on the Skendleby Stones.
The talk was the first part of a New Research Project.
In 2003 a number of pieces of carved stone, presumed to be from the chapel of St James, were discovered in Skendleby. These stones are now collected and stored together but at present there is no accurate record of them.
This project aims to draw and record a selection of the stones and then to deposit the records with HER etc.
In order to achieve this, we need to acquire the principles and skills of stone recording and to understand better the architectural forms and the masonry techniques in use in this body of material.
Professor Mark Gardiner kindly agreed to lead this research, and we started with an introductory talk, which will provide an insight into mediaeval stonework and stone recording.
On completion of the talk we went along to St Michaels Church, Martin which is thought to be around the same period as the stones, where we could see what mediaeval stonework looks like in situ which may help to understand better Skendleby Stones.
