On Friday evening, the 5th of September 2025, in Stickford Church, Dave Start gave us a talk entitled “The Story of the Stones”. It was an update on the story of Sutterby Church, or at least far as we have managed to discover. (Stickford Church is at the moment the temporary home of scale model of Sutterby Church [Woolly Walls].)
In 2014 we took a set of photos of the north wall of the church joined them all up (not easy) and plotted the brickwork, so all the faults/cracks showed up and tried to work out the sequence of events. We came up with a series of results.
In 2015 we found a line of masonry in front of the west wall. We got permission to carry out “a Dig” and found 3 sets of old church foundations (one of which cut through a skeleton’s legs, which we got carbon dated) So now we had a date of death of 1049 – 1085.
Another set of photos of the north and west were taken (professionally this time) and both plotted which gave us more accurate results, this and further documents we found have given us the latest phases of the church walls.
