On Tuesday 11th November 2025 at 1300hrs Dave Start gave us a talk on “Ancient and Roman Tracks and Roads in Lincolnshire” for the Sandwich Filler Talk.
Franklin Hall, Spilsby, Conference room was full to capacity for this. Dave as usual gave us a very interesting and informative illustrated talk. Starting off by saying Ancient Britains did not have a need or much use for roads as they made do with their surroundings, it was only when they needed better tools etc. that tracks began to come into use to obtain harder rock or better quality flint.
It was the Romans who started building roads to invade and subdue the locals and needed direct and quick routes to deploy their troops, using ridgeways where possible so they were safe from ambush by having a clear all-round view. If there was no ridgeway, they would clear a large area either side of the road for safety. Forts would be placed along the roads to house men and horses, these later became towns.
When the Romans left, the roads were put to civilian use and are still visible in places to this day. Our local Roman Road RR27 Lincoln to Burgh-le-Marsh was traced on foot and lidar Dave and Pete Millburn and described in detail by Dave.
Many thanks for another great talk Dave, we all enjoy listening to you.
