The Heritage and Development of Lincolnshire’s Maps – Dr Caitlin Green

Last night Dr Caitlin Green gave us a talk on the heritage and development of Lincolnshire’s maps. The talk took place in the Methodist Rooms, Spilsby.

Wow, what an interesting and detailed talk from Caitlin, we were all totally enthralled with the information she told us, she certainly knows her maps! We went from the earliest known 1200c copy of a map of Roman Europe showing the routes and waypoints from Britannia on one side to China on the other, though to Hermans Moll’s 1724 Map of Northern Lincolnshire with many maps in between, in about 2 hours with a break for tea and cake in the middle. The information and explanations of the slides were really interesting. We are so used to reading maps that are more or less exact representations of the land masses as seen from above, and ancient maps drawn from the ground are very different and bear little resemblance to what is there and only show details they want to show.

Many, many thanks to Caitlin for a great talk and we do hope she will return again soon.

The themed cake was as is usual supplied by The Artisan Bakery of Firsby and was cut by Caitlin after she had signed the SOS apron.
